History

Prospectors' name reported in 1903 by D. C. Witherspoon (in Moffit, 1905, pl. 3), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The name is derived from a bush or shrub that grew along the banks of the stream, which resembled "candlewood" or "greasewood" in that it will light a fire easily (Hick, 1954, p. 14).
