Heads at 6035N, 15606W and flows southwest 242 miles to join the Wood River to form Nushagak Bay, 2 miles east of Dillingham, Bristol Bay Low.


History

Eskimo name recorded about 1809 by Sub. Lieutenant Ivan Filipovich Vasiliev, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). Published as "Reka Nushegak" by Lieutenant Sarichev, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN) (1826, map 3). In 1778 Captain James Cook, RN, (1785, p. 433) named this feature "Bristol River." See Bristol Bay. According to Lieutenant L.A.Zagoskin, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN) (Michael, p. 254), in 1844 the headwater of this stream, above the Nuyakuk River, was called "Ilgayak" by the Eskimos.
