History

Named for Thor, Norse God of Thunder, because of the noise of avalanches on the feature. In December 1964, Mount Willard Gibbs was submitted as a name change proposal for this feature. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names (USBGN) rejected the proposal in February 1965, because no significant association was shown between Professor Gibbs and the feature to be named.
