About

Extends from Sagavanirkotok River and North Fork Chandalar River on the southwest to Canning River and East Fork Chandalar River on the northeast, in the Brooks Range.

History

Named in 1950 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) after Philip Sidney Smith (1877-1949), chief Alaska geologist of the Geological Survey from 1925 to 1946, and at one time the acting director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
