Getting There

The fastest way to False Island is flying to Sitka and taking a floatplane air taxi.

It's 55 miles north out of Sitka around the top of Baranof Island, and down across Peril Strait, to boat to False Island.

False Island lies in Peril Strait, just off the west coast of Chichagof Island, about 35 miles north of Sitka. The island is heavily forested and was formerly home to a logging which established a community and roads along the island.

Orca and humpback whales are commonly seen around the island. The creeks on the island provide excellent fishing, while fishing in Peril Strait offers good halibut fishing.

History

Named in 1895 by Lieutenant Commander Moore, U.S. Navy (USN), and published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) on Chart 8283. Probably so named because it is tied at low tide to the mainland by a sand bar.

In the 1990's False Island was home to a logging operation and a community was formed.
