E of Copper I., in Plover Is., 27 mi. E of Barrown, Arctic Plain

History

Named in 1850 by Commander Moore, Royal Navy (RN), for one of his officers. Commander Maguire (Great Britain, 1854, map facing p. 186), Royal Navy (RN), shows it as the first island E of Point Barrow, now named Doctor Island. Leffingwell (1919, p. 97) applied the anme to the present day Cooper Island and reported the Eskimo name "Shiningarok," meaning "he slept."
