Getting There

Gakona Glacier is located east of the Richardson Highway, near Summit Lake, north of Paxson.

The easiest ways to access are air taxi, and snowmachine (snowmobile) from near Summit Lake.

Gakona Glacier is a remote glacier located in the Eastern Alaska Range It is made up of several glaciers that flow south of the divide and into the valley below. Where all these glaciers meet they form the Gakona Glacier. Flowing in from the North, as well as from the East and the West, before flowing south.

The convergence zone is often smooth for winter landings while the higher up you go in any direction, the terrain is steeper and more crevasses are present.
