History

Named in 1884 by Commander Coghlan for the U.S.S. Pinta, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) vessel, which navigated these waters. The name was published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1891 Coast Pilot (p. 181).
