on SW coast of Unalaska I., 16 mi. E of Fort Glenn, Aleutian Islands.

History

Recorded in 1792 as "M(ys) Ammak," probably from "ammak" the Aleut word for "night", by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 14), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). According to R. H. Geoghegan, the name "Mys Aspidskiy" was published in 1850 by Father Veniaminov, derived from the derogatory name "Aspid," meaning "asp", given by the Russians to an unpopular local Aleut chief. Published as "M(ys) Aspidney" by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 25), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). In 1888 U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) published "Nellie Juan Cape", "presumably after the schooner Nellie Juan, belonging to Mr. Samuel Applegate" (Baker, 1906, p. 107); Applegate contributed to the 11th Census taken in the Prince William Sound area.
