HistoryNamed in 1884 by Commander J. B. Coghlan, U.S. Navy (USN), for Lieutenant Frederick M. Symonds, who served under Captain L. A. Beardslee on the U.S.S. Jamestown and under Commander H. Glass, U.S. Navy (USN), on the USS Wachusett, while surveying this part of Alaska in 1879-81. The name was published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 173).
