Red-breasted Merganser in Detail.

Red-breasted merganser males have long rakish crest while females have short crest.

Males have dark heads with green gloss. Their necks have a white collar and white bar that runs the length of their body between their back and sides. Their backs are black and their sides are white with small vertical gray bars. Their chest beneath their collars are a red-chestnut color.

Females are a mix of rusty red chestnut with whitish throats and breast.

Red-breasted mergansers are one of the fastest flying ducks, recorded flying at speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Red-breasted mergansers can be found throughout Alaska.
