History

named in 1906 by Andrew Braid, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS). from the Orca Cannery of the Pacific Steam Whaling Co. cannery was in turned named for one of the company's vessels. The bay was originally named "Puerto Cordova," by Senor Don Salvador Fidalgo who visited the region in 1790. "Cordova" was adopted by Captain Vancouver, Royal Navy (RN), during his exploration of the Prince William Sound region in 1794. name was in common use until the Board on Geographic Names (BGN), at Braid's suggestion, changed it to "Orca Bay" to avoid confusion with the Cordova Bay in Dixon Entance (Wagner, 1937, p. 444).
