History

Named "Zakharovskaia anse" or "Zakharof Bay" by Captain Lutke (1836, p. 267) "for a Russian named Zakharef," according to W. H. Dall Published as "Zachary Bay" in 1872 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS). Shown as "Coal Harbor" on an 1890 U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) chart.
